If you thought 2017’s horror lineup was awesome, buckle up for 2018’s horror movies. From supernatural horrors to the reemergence of classical characters — 2018 is looking dark, in the best possible way. Here’s a list of new horror movies that will open this year with new, fresh screams.
1. Insidious: The Last Key (Jan. 5, 2018)
Director James Wan explains that “The Last Key” goes back to Elise’s past. In this movie, the audience gets to meet Elise in a whole new light. It also continues from chapter 3, where she forms a company with Specs and Tucker. Demonologist Elise has been a staple in each Insidious chapter, even though she was first introduced at the end of the first entry. The movie was pushed after Halloween, simply because it wouldn’t have much competition. So, expect high box office ratings and talks about chapter 5.
2. Day of the Dead: Bloodline (Jan. 5, 2018)
The ultimately gory and bloody “Day of the Dead” from 1985 just got a remake. “Day of the Dead: Bloodline” is one of the most controversial movies on this list simply because of the high levels of violence and extremely dark plots. If you’re into gore movies, this one should be on your must watch list for 2018.
3. Mom and Dad (Jan. 19, 2018)
The film explores a night in the lives of two children as an unexplained epidemic sets in—one that causes parents all over the world to begin single-mindedly trying to murder their children. It sounds like an awesome premise, even more so when factoring in that the titular parental units are played by Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions, Hellboy) and Nicolas Cage. The movie is a mix of crazy, humorous and smart, accompanied by the unique performance of Nicolas Cage throughout the entire movie.
4. Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built (Feb. 23, 2018)
This movie is inspired by a true story of heiress Sarah Winchester, whose mansion is the stuff of legend. Her mansion is made of endless rooms and hallways, that make no sense from a construction standpoint. It was said that ghosts told her to build them and if she stopped with construction – she would be haunted forever. Bringing in Helen Mirren to play the main role elevates the movie into a masterpiece.
5. Strangers – Prey at Night (Mar. 9, 2018)
The Strangers was pretty freaking scary when it was released in 2008. As the years went by, many fans thought it was nearly impossible for a sequel to come out. The sequel reportedly takes part in a trailer park in a remote area during a power outage (pretty creepy). Christina Hendricks takes the lead role, as she and her family get lost during a road trip which takes an unfortunate turn. All we need is to wait till March and finally re-live the horror that The Strangers brought us 10 years ago.
6. A Quiet Place (Apr. 6, 2018)
Hollywood power couple Jon Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who will be appearing on screen together for the first time ever. The couple prefers not to work together, but couldn’t resist after reading the script. Jon Krasinski also had involvement in the script. Plot details for Quiet Place are kept under wraps, so we’ll just wait to see it on April 6, 2018.
7. Truth or Dare (Apr. 27, 2018)
According to Deadline, the story follows a college student who gets wrapped up in a supernatural version of the titular game while vacationing in Mexico—and brings the creepy festivities home with her. Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale has been cast in the lead, and we can expect to see a lot more of her in the coming months—she’s also starring in the Netflix original Dude and the Lauren Lapkus comedy The Unicorn, both of which are currently in post-production.
